How employers can help Codebar teach coding for free

Codebar is doing an important job, teaching programming to underrepresented people in tech. But as an employer, you can help them…

Codebar is a charity with a mission: to help make tech more diverse. They provide free tutorials to traditionally underrepresented people in the industry: women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ and disabled people.

Their tutorials have been a hit all over the country, but they rely on the help of volunteers and sponsors to keep running.

Why you should get involved

By coaching or sponsoring Codebar, you’re helping the next generation of talent get the skills they need. One of these novices could end up running your company’s tech team one day so it’s a great investment.

You’re also passing on your knowledge to the people that need it most. We all know that learning code can be hard. It not only costs brainpower but time, energy and often money that lots of people just can’t spare.

By helping Codebar spread the knowledge, you’re helping make code more accessible. You’ll only lose the occasional evening, but you’ll be doing something valuable that could change someone’s life and career for the better.

And this is all obviously great PR too.

Here’s how you can help them make jobs in tech more accessible to everyone.

how you can help codebar

Become a coach

Becoming a coach is the most effective way of personally helping the next generation of tech whizzes. You’ll get to sit side by side (if social distancing allows) with people that are itching to learn code.

You’ll get to chat to the students, find out what they’re looking to learn and what they’re looking for in a job. But don’t worry, you’re not going to be teaching them how to create an app from scratch. Most of the students won’t be looking to learn it all – they might just want to learn how to build a website or something basic.

It’s clearly a great opportunity – over 2000 people have signed up to coach already. To start mentoring today, sign up on Codebar’s website.

Become a sponsor

Codebar also run a sponsorship programme which is just as great. To join the likes of Google, Forbes and Microsoft on the all-star sponsor list, you have to tick a few boxes.

As a sponsor you will host Codebar events (at your physical premises, again only if social distancing allows it!). See the full terms and conditions for becoming a sponsor here.
